Do You or a Loved One Meet the Criteria To Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit or License Plates?

If you are concerned that you or a loved one may need disabled parking permits or license plates, please see your physician. The individual, their physician, and the individual transferring the dependent (if applicable) are able to fill out the form listed at the bottom of this page that will need to be printed out and taken to your doctor and signed by a physician. Once all sections are completed the form can be sent to the county treasurer's office for approval.    

Which Permit Do I Apply For?

If you are an individual or business that will be transferring someone who is disabled, you will need to apply for a parking permit. This permit is only to be used when a person with a physical disability is in the vehicle. You have up to 30 days to return your parking permit to the county treasurer's office when you are no longer the individual’s resource for transportation. Individuals may obtain up to two permanent portable permits if you own multiple vehicles and businesses may obtain as many as they need.

If you have a physical disability, are the owner of a vehicle and operate or direct the operation of the vehicle, you may submit your application for disabled license plates If you have a physical disability and are the owner of a SD registered vehicle. You may obtain up to two permanent portable permits if you own multiple vehicles

5 Common Mistakes in Applying for Disabled Parking Plates

As you fill out your application, please keep in mind the 5 common errors we see when individual's fill out this form.

1. The doctor has not signed the specified section in the application stating the individual's current disability. 

It is required in the Disabled Parking Permit and License Plate Application that your physician provides the individual's circumstance along with their written consent that this is a temporary or permanent disability.

2. No signature was provided on the application.

It is the individual's responsibility to sign the application in which they would like to receive the specified permit and/or plates. Additionally, you are responsible for obtaining the signature from your physician in regards to your circumstance.

3. The dependent name is not listed on the application.

If you are the individual who will be transferring the dependent, be sure to state the dependent's name on the application. List your name in the first box and the dependent's name who will be transported in the box to the right of your name. 

4. Too much information was given on the application. 

If a person is not applying for license plates and only applying for a hanging placard, the vehicle information is not required.

5. No identifying numbers for the applicant was given on the application.

It is required that you list the driver's license number or the social security number of the individual applying.
