How to get a new 2016 Non-Commercial Standard Plate After January 1, 2016, renew your registration within your renewal period. After renewing your registration, you will get your new plate. Visit our fees page to see costs for specific plates.
Methods of Renewal

Go Online--log on to http://mysdcars.sd.gov to renew your vehicle registrations. After renewing, your new plate and registration stickers will be mailed to you.

Visit a Self-Service Terminal--Renew your registration at one of our many locations. Registration stickers or a permit will print directly at the machine, while plates will be delivered by mail.

Visit your local County Treasurer's Office--Please bring your registration renewal notice if applicable.

Plate Requirements

Plate Requirements (Only renewals processed after December 31, 2015 will receive the new plate designs)

Amateur Radio

For Reissue – Renew your registration and provide a copy of your current FCC license

For First application – Must be a South Dakota resident and provide your FCC license, call number, a Special License Plate application and a $10 initial license fee.

Personalized

For Reissue --After renewing your registration, your 2016 personalized plate will be mailed to you after you verify your plate message. You will receive a 45-day permit while your plate is in production.

For First application –Must be a South Dakota and complete a South Dakota Personalized License plate application along with $25 and regular licensing fees.

Low Speed Vehicle

For Reissue --Renew your registration.

For First application –Applicants must provide their South Dakota Driver License number, South Dakota ID number, or Social Security number, along with the Affidavit for a Low-Speed Vehicle.

The vehicle can go more than 20mph but not more than 25 mph, and the title or MSO must indicate "Low Speed Vehicle."

For Reissue --Renew your registration.

For First application –Applicants must provide their South Dakota Driver License number, South Dakota ID number, or Social Security number. If acquired during your regular renewal period, there is not an additional application or fee outside of your regular registration fees. If the plate is aquired outside of your renewal period, there is an additional $10 fee.

Plates are only transferable to a newly acquired vehicle from a sold vehicle.
